Alibaba’s international arm has launched an updated AI translation tool that it says surpasses the capabilities of Google, DeepL, and ChatGPT. The new version of the AI translation tool, called Marco MT, was benchmarked by Flores and showed superior performance, according to Alibaba.
This AI translation tool builds on the original version launched a year ago, which already serves 500,000 merchant users. Sellers can leverage the tool to create product listings in the local language of their target markets, helping boost sales and expand their reach.
Powered by Alibaba’s large language model, Qwen, the AI translation tool provides contextual translations that consider cultural nuances and industry-specific terminology. Supporting 15 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, English, French, and Spanish, Marco MT enhances the localization process for global markets.
Kaifu Zhang, Vice President of Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group, stated that the goal of the AI translation tool is to improve merchants’ bottom lines, as their success drives the platform’s growth. Alibaba expects substantial demand from Europe, the Americas, and emerging markets.
Since its initial launch, the AI translation tool has been used for more than 100 million product listings. With more authentic and contextually accurate translations, Alibaba anticipates a better customer experience during the upcoming Double 11 shopping festival.
The company’s international business, which includes platforms like AliExpress and Lazada, saw a 32% revenue increase to $4.03 billion in the last quarter, a stark contrast to its domestic e-commerce business.
